Bolivarian Venezuela’s Struggle for Food Sovereignty under the US Blockade

William Camacaro will interview Hugo Alberto Nieves on the progress and challenges the movements in Venezuela have made to re-establish national food sovereignty. (Simultaneous English translation will be provided.)

William Camacaro maintains the website (in English), revolucionalimentaria.org, a resource for background information on Venezuela and food sovereignty. Hugo Alberto Nieves is a long-time activist of the Bolivar and Zamora Revolutionary Current (CRBZ) and Frente Nacional Campesino Ezequiel Zamora (FNCEZ), part of the Latin American Coordinator of Rural Organizations (CLOC) and the Vía Campesina (VC).

The Western conquest of the Third World destroyed and then rebuilt Third World agricultural and economic systems to serve the Western powers. As a result, most Third World countries were made dependent on food imports from the imperial powers as a weapon held over their heads. Bolivarian Venezuela continues to struggle with food independence, especially under US blockade designed to force them to surrender their sovereignty.
